USA’s Most Dangerous Hikes

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Just got sent this from a friend, although I haven’t validated on the website (thanks Louise!)

America’s 10 Most Dangerous Hikes (Backpacker Magazine) -
1. The Maze, UT
2. Bright Angel Trail, Grand Canyon, AZ
3. Barr Trail, Pikes Peak, CO
4. Mt. Washington, NH
5. Muir Snowfield, Mt. Rainier, WA
6. Huckleberry Mtn., Apgar Range, MT
7. Kalalau Trail, Kauai, HI
8. Buckskin Gulch, UT
9. Abrams Falls, Great Smoky Mtns., TN
10. Mist Trail, Half Dome, CA

It should be noted that “dangerous” is a function of only partially the terrain, as well as weather, experience, equipment, etc. I had a close friend almost get struck by a rattlesnake when we were hours away from civilization on an otherwise innocuous trail. Similarly, Kilimanjaro got very tricky for us early this year when we got caught in 3 feet of snow and pretty bad conditions. All of our team summitted and got back down safely – however that can’t be said for many of the others who were on the mountain at the same time.

Anyway, a few of these were completely new to me, and probably worth of some further research.
